KEY OF LIBERTY

Empower your child with the Key of Liberty LEMI Scholar Project! This class dives deep into early American history as they study the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Bill of Rights. They will also learn more about the Pilgrims, the Founding Fathers and the American Revolutionary War. This class explores a wide array of topics, including the purpose of government, world crises, leadership, and statesmanship through presentations and through reading freedom classics. We will bring history to life through historical simulations and encourage critical thinking. It will help the young scholars discover their voices, understand their rights, and recognize their responsibilities as informed citizens. It is a powerful, enlightening class that every middle school student should take!

Leadership education “emphasize[s] originality, creativity, breadth, depth and leadership skills.” Oliver DeMille

LEADERSHIP EDUCATION

While we also draw upon principles of Charlotte Mason and Well-Educated Heart philosophies in this class, the Key of Liberty is primarily a leadership education class as outlined in the book A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille. Leadership Education encourages deep thinking and discussion, advocates learning from the great classics instead of textbooks, and inspires each person to discover his or her unique gifts and talents and his or her personal life mission.

Discuss Classics and Great Ideas

The students will read and discuss classics and biographies. They will also explore and discuss many great ideas such as freedom, the purpose of government, traits of a hero, statesmanship, world crises, leadership and being a virtuous citizen.

Historical Simulations

The students will participate in historical simulations bringing history to life. For example, by taking on the role of a colonist resisting the Stamp Act or acting out the Constitutional Convention, the students learn in a powerful, memorable way.

Constitution
Bowl

The students will read Constitution, article by article, and write it into their own words to help them thoroughly understand it. They will define terms. This prepares them to compete in a Constitution Bowl against other homeschool groups.
