SWORD OF FREEDOM

AND HERO PROJECT

The Sword of Freedom and Hero Scholar Projects is a transformative class that goes beyond traditional history by immersing scholars in the Civil War and World War II while inspiring them to discover the hero within themselves. Through classic literature, biographies, speeches, simulations, and meaningful projects, students explore foundational principles of leadership, virtue, and moral decision-making. While connecting with real historical heroes, they will gain a deeper understanding of how individual choices shape history and their own lives.

Leadership education “emphasize[s] originality, creativity, breadth, depth and leadership skills.” Oliver DeMille

LEADERSHIP EDUCATION

While we also draw upon principles of Charlotte Mason and Well-Educated Heart philosophies in this class, the Key of Liberty is primarily a leadership education class as outlined in the book A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille. Leadership Education encourages deep thinking and discussion, advocates learning from the great classics instead of textbooks, and inspires each person to discover his or her unique gifts and talents and his or her personal life mission.

Discuss Classics

The students will read and discuss classics, biographies and great speeches. They will also explore and discuss many great ideas such as leadership, traits that define heroes, moral decision-making in times of war, constitutionality and slavery.

Historical Simulations

The students will participate in historical simulations bringing history to life. For example, by taking on the role of a colonist resisting the Stamp Act or acting out the Constitutional Convention, the students learn in a powerful, memorable way.

Writing Workshops

The students will be guided in regular writing workshops where they will be given time in class and outside of class to write opinion papers. At the writing workshop they will be given positive and constructive feedback.
